How to put a portfolio together
As a creative you'll be well aware that a CV is just not enough
to show what you can really do. A portfolio is the only way you can
actually show your work and ideas in action. One size does not
necessarily fit all, but our top tips should get you on the right
track.
Size
- Offline folios should be no longer than A3.
- Online, be aware of PDF file sizes. Anymore than 4mb and you
risk bounce backs. You can always create an online portfolio to
display additional pieces.
Content
- Be selective - 5 beautifully executed campaigns will be more
effective than 25 mediocre ones.
- Present a cross-section of your work not 5 examples of the same
campaign.
- Introduce each piece and outline the brief.
- Show campaign thinking across all media channels that is was
used.
- Include recent work.
- You may not be there when your folio is presented, if there's
something important that needs to be said, add annotations to speak
for you in your absence.
Display
- Make sure you print your work in a size that can be read.
- Keep it organised and coherent.
- Don't slip up on the finishing touches, grammatical errors and
bad typographies can distract attention from your hard work.
Presentation
- When presenting your portfolio be enthusiastic, show that you
are proud of your work.
- Practice your presentation - practice makes perfect.
- Don't criticise your own work, you're audience will assume
you're presenting your best work so make sure do it justice.
